Rummana Ahmed's Film Reviews
-
‘Badhaai Ho’ is seasoned with a certain ‘Delhiness’ and is weaved together with lots of fun, laughter and a fine insight into traditional relationships in modern India. This one is a must watch.
-
Before I say anything more, I suggest you watch ‘Andhadhun’ and then we can match our notes. If you watched Sriram Raghavan’s earlier works (‘Ek Hasina Thi’ (2004), ‘Badlapur’ (2015) among others), you know this one too isn’t going to be a predictable tale. Yet again, Raghavan has come up with something dark and delicious.
-
Much like Rajkummar Rao’s ‘Bareily Ki Barfi’, ‘Stree’ is a small-town story that has its own charm. And also its fair share of laughs and scares.
-
To be fair, ‘Happy Phirr Bhag Jayegi’ is not unwatchable, just something you can unregretfully give a miss.
-
Director Akarsh Khurana manages to get some interesting characters other than the main leads who keep you invested in this tale. The music has the right breezy feel to it which adds just the right amount of zing to this slice of life tale.
Watch ‘Karwaan’ for Irrfan and Dulquer, this one will keep you smiling much after you have left the theatre.
-
‘Saheb Biwi Aur Gangster 3’, with an ‘A’ certification, seems more an exercise in titillation than an attempt at recounting a twisted tale about complex characters. The latest edition is no match for the intrigue and the craft that was at display when Dhulia directed the prequels. Without any FOMO, you can give this a wide berth.
-
The flaws notwithstanding, I would recommend ‘Soorma’. This is an inspiring story that needed to be told and needs to be watched. The movie may lack the sheen of some recent biopics, but I’d still say you go and watch it. Indian hockey, which probably deserves much more, deserves nothing less.
-
In sum, this is not entirely unwatchable. Only, in trying too hard to play it cool, the whole experience comes across as somewhat pretentious.
-
‘Beyond the Clouds’ is definitely worth a watch. If nothing else, Ishaan Khatter’s character will make you want to believe in goodness and humanity.
-
‘October’ is an unusual love story and Varun Dhawan’s acting is definitely worth watching.
