Shahid's heft is the only thing that keeps up the momentum in a mediocre rehash, dumbed down by flimsy motive and mindless bravado. Deva is a remake that undermines the moral dilemma and irony of the original by asserting its hypermasculinity to the hilt, forsaking the nuances of the Malayalam school of filmmaking for boisterous song and dance and slow-motion machismo.

Underwhelming. That's the one word review of Deva. Overall, Deva had so much potential to give us a massy character, who is always on the edge, truly unpredictable. What we get is a predictable story with an in-form Shahid.

'Deva' is a Bollywood cop-out of a daring Malayalam original that, despite better production values, fails to capture the essence of its source material and wastes Shahid Kapoor's talent.

Style resoundingly trumps substance in Andrews's first Bollywood outing, which is extraordinarily good-looking but has neither a halfway convincing plot nor engaging characters. Despite superb visuals and a blazing Shahid Kapoor, Deva is as cold to the touch as its treatment of weighty themes such as guilt, culpability and redemption is clinical.
