With the ever-reliable Tabu leading the way, the performances are right out of the top drawer.

Tabu shines in a moody spy thriller that loses its grip before the end.

Critic consensus
Critics are divided on Vishal Bhardwaj's espionage thriller, with appreciation spread unevenly across its parts. Tabu's performance and Bhardwaj's atmospheric, lyrical filmmaking draw consistent praise, with several critics noting strong individual sequences and a broody sense of mood. The more common complaint is that the film never fully delivers on its own potential — multiple reviewers describe it as hovering on the edge of something compelling without breaking through, with a third act that dissatisfies and a narrative that struggles to sustain tension across its runtime.

We needed more Tabu in this film. We needed more of the older Vishal Bhardwaj who used to make things sing.
Film review ·
Bhardwaj's talent for telling his versions of literary works with striking intimacy and broody lyricism colours Khufiya, his cunning and gripping adaptation of former Research and Analysis Wing officer Amar Bhushan's 2012 espionage novel. Khufiya has the length of a movie and satisfaction of long form, with beguiling sequences that exude the charisma of standalone shorts.
Film review
This espionage thriller is as heart-rending as intriguing. The fictional take on a novel said to be inspired by true events tells an engaging spy story.
Film review ·
Bhardwaj and his collaborators show respect for that guiding spirit of professionalism by only suggesting what various characters either aren't saying or aren't ready to admit to themselves. Rather, director Vishal Bhardwaj hints at interpersonal connections and inner lives that are either conveniently repressed or unexpectedly prioritized by various Indian spies and their expansive network of informants, allies, and fellow double agents.
Film review ·
Khufiya is a well-made espionage thriller which comes across as an interesting and entertaining film from Vishal Bhardwaj. There are some loopholes with the character graphs and slow pace in the US portions, however, Khufiya warrants a watch for the edge-of-the-seat moments coupled with strong performances by Tabu, Ashish Vidyarthi, Ali Fazal, and Wamiqa Gabbi among others.
Film review ·
Khufiya is an intense combination of suspense and complexity. The different layers and complexities of each of the characters is dealt in the finest possible ways. Through Khufiya, Bhradwaj has handled the LGBTQ angle in a very mature way.
Film review
The masterclass of how you should actually treat a true-blue espionage subject without meandering around useless things, though it goes by the book it is adapted from & the closure doesn't match the hype it creates to reach there. The brainy build-up begins to bedim the bespokely built belief in the bargain to bullsh*t in the third act.
Film review ·
Tabu's kohled eyes and witty smile do much more than spying, elevating the espionage narrative with her commanding presence and nuanced performance.
Film review ·
It is a bad sign when you like a trailer of a film better than the film itself. Unfortunately, that is the case with Vishal Bhardwaj's latest, the Netflix thriller 'Khufiya.' An espionage story needs to be taut, brimming with so much tension (loud or otherwise), that you can cut it with a knife. Khufiya simply doesn't have that.
Film review ·
Khufiya is about a lot, but it's also not really sure what it's about. When these narratives collide, there are sparks. But the explosion never arrives. The film is always on the brink of breaking out. And it stays on that brink.
Film review ·
Despite solid craft, meaty individual scenes and a few sharp performances, the film converts a long-distance run into a slog. Having flirted with shining a torch on the moral darkness involved in espionage, Khufiya settles for a routine thriller with an unconvincing outcome.
Film review
Vishal Bhardwaj once again employs his command over multiple art forms to generate an immersive experience that turns out to be less than the sum of its parts. He beguiles with the mood and melody but fails to sustain the spell till the end.
Film review
Khufiya is a world of 'what if's and 'maybe's and that's how it leaves you feeling, even if you end up with a content smile on your face. That is Khufiya's biggest setback – the reluctance to follow through on its most delicious angles. The film seems like it's often standing on a cliff, ready to take the plunge but it never happens.
