Critic consensus

What 7 critics are saying

Critical reception for Other Mommy leans predominantly negative, with most reviewers finding the film unable to fully realize its promising premise. Where praise exists, it centers on the performances — particularly Jessica Chastain and Leah Clark — and the film's psychological and guilt-driven underpinnings that distinguish it from straightforward genre fare. However, critics widely fault the film for an overreliance on repetitive jump scares, tonal inconsistency, and a failure to generate genuine suspense or emotional depth, with some finding it among the weakest releases of the year.

After that, Other Mommy is just a succession of jump scares, with bodies and things hurled around, including Bela's, and the film going around in loops and working its way around, painfully, to some sort of a conclusion. It's hard to comprehend why Jessica Chastain agreed to this, though it's easy to see the filmmakers saw her sharp, gaunt, porcelain-white face as perfect to seamlessly transition into something horrific and terrifying.
  2. Cinema Express

    Film review

Pretty much like its theme, Other Mommy is highly imperfect as it pulls itself in too many directions, attempting to look profound and also be a pulpy horror. The film is not an excellent horror, but you can't hate it for its imperfections either.

While Savage builds an intriguing metaphor around marital infidelities, suppressed guilt, and a young girl's emotional conflict, the narrative loses its grip under an over-reliance on repetitive jump scares, visceral body horror, and monotonous shock value. Other Mommy remains a watchable entry for fans of the genre due to its strong cast, but it ultimately sacrifices emotional depth for predictable theatrical thrills.
  4. The Free Press Journal

    Film review

Other Mommy, unfortunately, struggles to frighten its audience. The narrative mistakes prolonged foreboding for suspense, with scares that rarely materialise. The real horror here is watching a good idea struggle to become a good film.

The resulting collision is frequently ridiculous, rarely frightening, and strangely sad. As for Other Mommy, the filmmaker ultimately makes her easy to understand — even if their movie proves a bit harder to love.
  6. The Hindu

    Film review ·

Rob Savage's Other Mommy is a serviceable little horror film with just that touch of guilt and psychological underpinnings to make for a layered experience rather than a simple slice-and-dice affair. There is a lot of fun to be had in the performances and physical effects, with Chastain watchable as always and Clark proving to be a confident performer.
  7. Variety

    Film review

The finished product is among the most limp and ineffectual works to grace the screen this year, misfiring in every direction, including and especially its tone. That's about all that 'Other Mommy' is to its audience too: an annoyance to be handwaved, rather than tension or meaning to be confronted at any stage.
