Things go wrong, some threateningly bulky bears get involved, and relationships face minor crises. But all is well that ends well. Particularly when you can leave with a tune on your lips and a spring in your steps.

Sing might be a good one if you think that stepping into the New Year is no big deal, it’s the same thing as last year only the digits on the calendar have changed. But if you are like me, who wants to look at things afresh and the New Year holds special significance, then I think you want to see something that helps you make peace with the past and give hope for the future. This one might fall flat on both premises.

Most animated movies try to deliver a message and end up sounding preachy. Sing too, has one — once you hit rock bottom, there’s nowhere else to go but up. The sheer heart with which its characters live and convey the sentiment, is incredible.

The only issue I have with the film is the length. It drags a bit in the second half and maybe 15-20 minutes shorter would have made Dangal better.

  • It’s sure predictable but the finale that predictably includes every underdog getting a chance to shine will leave you with the guilty giggles of having enjoyed something you generally wouldn’t. If you have kids you should take them to the theater to see Sing – they will love you for it – especially since they were probably horrified by the number of deaths in the new Star Wars movie. If you’re lucky enough to find a screen playing the film in 2D, choose that one over the 3D.

Overall, the film is a light entertainer that will wow children and adults alike.

  • One can imagine the pitch meeting: It’s American Idol, but animated, and everyone’s an animal.
And actually, that pitch meeting would be pretty much on the money. Sing doesn’t miss, at all.
