  1. Cinema Express

    Film review ·

Director Vamshi Paidipally and Co have given this age-old recipe a refreshing twist by adding an ample dose of self-awareness and humour. An in-form Vijay and the self-awareness of the film make up for the shortcomings despite occasional tonal inconsistencies.
  2. The News Minute

    Film review ·

Varisu is a predictable but enjoyable family drama that manages to entertain the audience through Vijay's playful comic avatar and solid action sequences, though it falters on emotions and relies on outdated messaging about toxic family dynamics.
  3. Times Of India

    Film review

Vijay is in terrific form, cracking one-liners that have us break out into a smile. Varisu is a potent commercial cocktail that delivers on its promise of entertainment.
  4. India Today

    Film review ·

The film works for the most part and is what we would expect from a family entertainer. Though the film is reminiscent of some Telugu films, Vijay keeps us engaged with his comedy and action. All in all, Vijay's Varisu is a good family film to catch this Pongal.
  5. Indian Express

    Film review ·

It's silly, dumb, and illogical… but fun. Varisu is a mix-mash of many films with a screenplay that comes across as a product of an algorithm. That makes Varisu more of a product than a film.
  6. News18

    Film review ·

Director Vamshi Paidipally knows how to use Vijay. The film follows a basic formula template, but it does not get jarring. In all this drama, Vijay excels in a perfect popcorn film that will see theatres come alive again.
  7. Deccan Herald

    Film review ·

The hangover of an average Telugu blockbuster looms so large over 'Varisu' that it's impossible to embrace this bloated melodrama that is obsessed with the 'family sentiment' trope. 'Varisu' is replete with outdated writing decisions and far from a festival film that gets its commercial elements right.
  8. The Week

    Film review ·

Varisu is a Vijay show all the way, with some lengthy dialogues that are overly preachy. Although the music is sufficiently peppy and there are some emotional scenes, the movie has nothing new to offer and may disappoint even hardcore Vijay fans.
  9. Firstpost

    Film review ·

Varisu is playing in cinemas near you, but the film exploits emotions—mainly that of women—in an archaic setup through emotional manipulation, using female characters as objects of foil to justify toxic family dynamics under the garb of filial piety.
  10. Hindustan Times

    Film review

Varisu is predictable from the word go but what still works in its favour is the mere presence of Vijay. Having predominantly worked in action films in recent years, it was refreshing to see Vijay have fun in an out-and-out family flick.
  11. The Hindu

    Film review

For a first half that relies heavily on the slow, TV serial-like sequences, Varisu has little heft to the emotional beats; the mother-son relationship seems superficial, while the brothers' tussle to take over a multi-crore business seems trivial. It is only in the second half that Varisu picks up some steam.
