Thankfully, after a draggy start, Aaryan pulls itself together in the second half. The "how" of the murders and the ticking clock deliver some genuinely racy, interesting thrills. Vishnu Vishal carries the film well, and the finale, which traps him in the killer's story, is well-staged.

Vaazhai has got heart and looks the part, but it could've used a bit more grey in its village tableau. The film's so busy painting this black-and-white picture of the downtrodden versus the village bigwigs that it forgets to add some shades of grey, making it tougher to stay connected despite stellar performances from the young leads.
