Silver Linings Playbook

Silver Linings Playbook

2012 · Rediff · Nov 2015

One would wonder how funny a story about a train-wreck of a marriage, two clinically neurotic people fighting their inner demons and compulsive bookmaking can be. One would wonder before watching David O Russell's delightful romance-comedy-drama Silver Linings Playbook.

If you ask me, you'd do well to just let Johnny escape this weekend and find something actually fun to do instead.

If you loved the Gangs of Wasseypur movies, you'll find Meeruthiya Gangsters engaging in parts. Not a bad attempt at all for a debutant director.

I Love New Year

2015 · Rediff · Jul 2015

Kangana does manage to salvage a scene or two with her now-famous screen presence. But that's pretty much it. Give this one a miss if you love New Year's Eve. Or new York. Or both.

Coffee Bloom

Coffee Bloom

2015 · Rediff · Mar 2015

Shot on location in Coorg, the film offers scenic views of the majestic estate and the idyllic life its owners lead. The conversations, however, are less poetic. The dialogues oscillate between verbose and flippant throughout the film, consequently diluting the impact the film's key moments could have otherwise had.

Hawaizaada

Hawaizaada

2015 · Rediff · Jan 2015

While the background score of the film is as uninspired as its screenplay, the many songs are generic at best. Hawaizaada, in the end, is a flight of fancy that fails to take off.

The Hunger Games: Mockingjay – Part 1

2014 · Rediff · Nov 2014

The only thing Zid has going for it is the atmospheric chills it offers by way of perennially grey skies, dense foliage around the bungalow and beyond, and the sense of distant melancholy the camera lends to the scenes.

Happy Ending

Happy Ending

2014 · Rediff · Nov 2014

Happy Ending, at its core, is pretentious and doesn't quite live up to expectations, save for Govinda, who lights up the screen with his mere presence and those legendary moves. In a film that every cast member is so desperately trying to fit in, he is the only one who actually manages to convince us that he truly belongs there and he knows it.

The Hundred-Foot Journey

The Hundred-Foot Journey

2014 · Rediff · Aug 2014

The Hundred-Foot Journey has a few ingredients that go into making a cracker of a dish -- two acting stalwarts who light up the screen with their mere presence, several gastronomically evocative shots, and beautiful locales. Unfortunately, it's got the recipe all wrong.

Lekar Hum Deewana Dil

Dishkiyaoon

2014 · Rediff · Mar 2014

The comic punches are too few and far between, plot twists make little sense and are saddled with glaring loopholes. The film's climax will take you by surprise. Which is not to say that it's a well-made thriller. It just means that you got so engrossed in trying to make sense of this haphazardly put-together story, you didn't have much time to realise there'd be the big reveal at the end of it for you to apprehend.

Fukrey

Formulas in Hindi films, no matter how popular or timeless, have been known to run their course in due time. So it comes as a mild disappointment when a film co-produced by Akhtar, a film that looked so promising on paper, fails to deliver.

I, Me Aur Main

I Me Aur Main falters with its plot, does a mild disservice to the ladies and is unreasonably forgiving of its protagonist. If you can get past that, it's a film you wouldn't mind watching once.
