Sonia Chopra's Film Reviews

There’s so much to be savoured in the film — from the performances, aesthetics, music, and the story itself. You don’t watch a film like this, you soak it in!

It’s exhilarating to get the opportunity to watch Sholay on the big screen. I was jittery about the 3D, but thankfully it doesn’t take anything away from the movie. The shots where things are flung in your direction are gimmicky, but the 3D is at its best when it’s invisible, giving you the added depth and bringing the story alive.

Debut director Samir Tewari’s Mr. Joe B. Carvalho is not as funny as its title. It’s impossible to endure a below-par film for just a couple of funny moments. Too bad, really. It would have been wonderful to begin the New Year with a crackling comedy.

One wishes our filmmakers quit mythological stories and gave our little viewers more age-appropriate stories that are full of magic and fun. That, or at least interpret the heavy-duty mythology to suit the sensibilities of children. Otherwise all they see is war, revenge and killing without understanding the real learning behind these epic stories!

Acharya leaves the audience in a twist during the interval, and you’re left guessing what the great suspense is. There are obvious Hollywood influences (Now You See Me, The Prestige, The Dark Knight Returns) all through, and one wonders whether it’s a paucity of original ideas or do production houses want to play too safe.

It is to Kapadia’s credit that the film is watchable, even if intermittently. How you wish this super-talented actress could find a film that exploits her comic timing. The rest of the cast does well, but is let down by the film. Sigh, yes. This is one of those films you reckon the title and concept is far more absorbing than the film itself. What’s the point then?

Filmmakers like Prabhu Dheva aren’t even trying to make good films. It’s a set formula that benefits average filmmakers and audiences that either don’t like being challenged, or don’t have other options.
Avoid, unless you’re stuck in a time-warp.

Watch if a dumbed-down film about senseless revenge and violence fills your heart. Otherwise, strictly avoid.

With severely cliched characters, a glaring lack of humour for a rom-com, and a muddled love story that does not hold your interest, the only upside to the film is Kareena Kapoor’s crackerjack performance.

For those who want to relive old-school melodrama, and consider themselves as Sunny Deol fans, there are no surprises in store. But then, that’s exactly what you signed up for.
