The message might be noble, but the narrative is weak, and this is perhaps the weakest of Hirani’s films. His trademark humour is sparse; and inspite of Anushka Sharma’s spirited portrayal of a reporter who helps PK, and Khan’s over-earnest performance as the protagonist, the film is a tedious watch.

This is an absolutely unmissable mass entertainer, if ever there has been one. It is unlikely that you will ever be more entertained and more enlightened – both at the same time – by a Bollywood film.

…with dodgy and inconsistent dialogue and repetitive visuals which look too similar to 3 Idiots and Lage Raho Munnabhai, PK doesn’t quite match up to the mark. It’s certainly not Hirani’s best. But it is good enough to engage and entertain the majority of its audience.

Aamir’s earnest as the elephant-eared PK, who unwittingly uncovers the frauds in the religion company. His language is spot-on, but his chiseled body appears misplaced. He’s a great performer, no doubt, but even he turns PK into a caricature. Anushka is the weakest link. Wonder if it’s her artificial pout that distracted us from appreciating her work. She’s capable of much more, but her Jaggu appears flat.

PK might not be the repeat value juggernaut like 3 Idiots, but it does have better content, execution and a more socially relevant topic. Props to Hirani and team for saving one of the most enjoyable movies of the year for the last.

On the face of it, PK is a simple, sweet family entertainer that has its heart in the right place and wants everyone to live happily ever after. It’s also one of the braver films we’ve seen from commercial Bollywood because of Hirani doesn’t shy away from pointing a steady finger at those who would inflame communal tensions for petty, personal gain. Somewhere under Hirani’s seemingly sweet and harmless exterior, is an angry, disappointed and disillusioned man. He doesn’t appear in the film promotions, but he’s the one making the films in which people take on the ugliness of the real world and defeat it. Their weapon of choice: optimism that just won’t give up, no matter how messed up everything may be. However, it’s telling that the one who wields that weapon in PK is an alien who just wants to get off this planet.

PK is an outstanding entertainer with a strong message relevant to all human beings. It will easily prove to be one of the biggest Bollywood blockbusters, probably, the biggest also. It has all chances to emerge as the first film to cross the Rs. 300-crore mark.

PK is a dialectic on religion on the big screen, without much of the splendour of cinematic technique. It is rooted to dialogues, scenes and characters, as does Hirani’s other films. But the director’s biggest feat is the idea, its effortless translation and its politics. Someone in the broad stroke canvas of populist Hindi cinema has finally spoken on behalf of the agnostic. Given the news headlines, how much more relevant could that get?

Hirani’s PK is no doubt a very important and relevant film for all of us who have suffered enough due to communal tensions, fanaticism, polarisation and even heartless terrorism. Like all Hirani films, the second half relies on the hero becoming a champion of social reform via media with doses of drama and feel-good by asking the right questions, all predictably intercut with weeping viewers intensely touched by the points made.

Rajkumar Hirani has succeeded in giving social message and dealing with the critical issue of religion with such innocence and humour. The blend of humour, drama and emotions has worked well for the ‘PK’, making it the most successful film of the year.

Now while its storyline is fascinating, PK has ample surprises which unfold layer by layer remarkably. But one thing, which needs to be made clear is that PK is not a out an out comedy-caper as its trailer and songs have hinted towards yet carrying the same thought-process while stepping into the theatres won’t disappoint you. While there is a serious subject Rajkumar Hirani is dealing with and his ways of presenting the entire issue turns out to be humorous.

PK movie is all that you anticipated, a paisa-vasool entertaining movie that will enthrall you for sure. PK is a must and should theater watch, so book you tickets soon and catch the movie on the big screen.

I won’t rate the film because to capture genuine efforts of a genuine filmmaker like Hirani in numbers will be unfair. So go watch the film. Like it or dislike it. But be fearless to question it as well, just like PK does, unapologetically, unabashedly in the film.
