The story carries on from the previous film— Inspector Chulbul Pandey (Salman Khan)— in charge of a local police station in Kanpur and resides there with his wife Rajjo (Sonakshi Sinha), brother Makkhi (Arbaaz Khan) and stepfather (Vinod Khanna). In Kanpur, an assassin murders a witness; about to testify against a dreaded don. Chulbul tracks the assassin down; killing him at a coffeehouse. The don is Bachcha (Prakash Raj), a struggling politician. After several public altercations, Bachcha's brother Genda (Deepak Dobriyal) convinces him to get rid of Pandey; threatening Chulbul's stepfather to kill his entire family if Chulbul keeps on interfering in Bachcha's criminal activities.

Critic Consensus

Critical reception for Dabangg 2 is mixed to lukewarm, with most reviewers awarding it around 50 out of 100. The film's entertainment value and Salman Khan's screen presence are acknowledged even by skeptical critics, with more favorable reviewers calling it a mass entertainer with broad commercial appeal. However, the majority of critics point to a weak, thin narrative and a heavy reliance on Khan's star power to carry the film, noting that every other element is subordinated to serving his persona. Several critics explicitly flag a sense of repetition and sameness compared to the original, and caution that the film holds little appeal for those not already invested in the Salman Khan brand.

"What this film needed was personality and character; what it's left with is sameness. But that's probably enough for Salman Khan fans."

"A sequel to this sequel may be too tempting to pass up for Chulbul and gang. I just hope they don't kill it with same old-ness. "pyaar se nahin, thappad se bhi nahin, boredom se darr lagta hai.""

"My review of Dabangg ended with a plea for a better story for Chulbul. Like so much else in Dabangg 2, that too remains the same. Can someone please write a terrific plot for this terrific character?"

"It's evident these movies aren't about anything but the person starring in them, and all that matters are punches and punchlines, both sadly unmemorable."

"On the whole, DABANGG 2 has Salman Khan, Salman Khan and Salman Khan + Entertainment, Entertainment and Entertainment in large doses. The film has the masala to work big time with the masses. This one will rewrite the rules of the game and the festive occasion [Christmas and New Year] will aid its potential. Sure shot Blockbuster!"

"While the film lacks in being a comprehensive package, it goes all the way in becoming yet another celebration of 'brand Salman'. Every other character and element of the film just helps him entertain you for two and a half hours. If you're looking for meaningful cinema, it is better you give this one a miss."

"Dabangg 2 is like the poorer clone of its precursor, but it's enjoyable with the action, Kung Fu Pandey, dollops of romance, songs and the rib-tickling comedy."

"Dabangg 2 is every inch of the way the critic-proof film that it is meant to be. No matter how many holes you might spot in its uncomplicated, wafer-thin narrative edifice, Bollywood's most bankable megastar's onscreen deeds, at a bit of a stretch, would serve to paper over all of them."
