Based upon Marvel Comics' most unconventional anti-hero, DEADPOOL tells the origin story of former Special Forces operative turned mercenary Wade Wilson, who after being subjected to a rogue experiment that leaves him with accelerated healing powers, adopts the alter ego Deadpool. Armed with his new abilities and a dark, twisted sense of humor, Deadpool hunts down the man who nearly destroyed his life.

Critic Consensus

Critical reception for Deadpool is largely positive, with most reviewers praising its sharp, irreverent humor and willingness to subvert superhero genre conventions. The film's comedy — described variously as witty, crass, and self-aware — is the most consistently celebrated element across reviews. Common criticisms include a predictable, formulaic plot that offers few surprises, and one reviewer noted that Indian censorship cuts dulled the film's intended edge. A handful of critics also felt the film's transgressive identity was more performative than genuinely boundary-pushing, and that it left little lasting impression beyond its entertainment value.

"This is unmistakably a comic-book film, and some fun new X-Men show up, but you don't need to know any more than the fact that this film really earns its exclamation marks."

"Far more daring, outrageous, and smart, compared to all those typical 'the-world-is-going-to-end' comic book movies, Deadpool is the most fun I've had at the cinema in a long time. It'll bring out the 15-year-old in you."

"Supported by a very clever script, Deadpool is deliciously irreverent, subversive and uproariously funny."

"The most interesting part of the film is Wade's sense of humour, especially during the killings. The dialogues are hilarious but it doesn't take you away from the intense moments of action. The music of the film is also perfectly in sync with the high-octane action sequence. It is one of the most well choreographed chase sequences you will see on a free way. Deadpool is a film you wouldn't want to miss."

"Do not walk-in expecting a great superhero movie, because it's not. It's actually a great love story, I swear. A good, R-Rated love story of an anti-hero, something that attempts to move higher above Marvel's regular clutter, and succeeds in doing so. It's more in line with Honest Trailers, inverting the film's strong points to ridicule it. As in one instance, Deadpool refers to its débutante director Tim Miller as "an overpaid idiot", but if I was Marvel I'd give him some extra to make another NSFW one."

"I'd recommend this movie to anyone, disclaimers notwithstanding (no kids, and maybe... girlfriends with a really formidable sense of humour?), as something that's so entertaining you won't just watch from start to end (the end credits are hilarious, too) but even sit back for the right-at-the-end credits (that Marvel is notorious for)."

"It's gratuitously violent. It's puerile, crass, meta and it goes to the ends of the earth to earn that R rating. In short, it's everything Deadpool should be."

"'Deadpool' has all the markings of a wannabe cool super-hero flick, and the genre staples are all too evident in the narrative spiel designed by helmer Tim Miller. So in terms of surprises, there are pitiably few but what really takes this routine experience to that of one that's supremely entertaining is the strong dose of humour underlying every bit of action and drama in the plot."

"The biggest achievement of Deadpool has to be the fact that it literally revives a genre that seems to be hitting saturation point. With Guardians of the Galaxy, this, and the upcoming Suicide Squad, we can be sure of one thing: No villain is going to beat this genre anytime soon. Like the comics on which these characters are based, the movies too will keep evolving."

"...is one part origin story, one part love story and whole lot of ass kicking action with brilliant, sharp, witty cuss filled humor of gore and theatricality with spot on yet subtle references to pop culture which is unmatched in this genre. A definite must watch for all superhero fans."

"Deadpool works for the same reason Comedy Central Roast does: it takes a dig at itself and heartily laughs at the cliches and idiosyncrasies associated with the genre."

"Despite its flaws, Deadpool is by far one of the more enjoyable films released in recent time. Though the film doesn't break new grounds when it comes to plot, it more than makes it up with its crazy narrative! Have no doubts – this SHOULD be your movie of the week i.e. if you don't mind your superhero say the F word a lot, and kill without second thoughts!"

"The tone of the movie felt kind of confused — edgy but not pushing the envelope far enough, thanks to the censors who have chopped off the extreme language, violence and sex. The other worrying thing is if the edgy becomes mainstream then the electric underground runs the danger of turning vanilla."

"In the end, it's hard to shake the feeling that they've made a movie for boys that only adults are allowed to see. For the future sleepover party where some open-minded parent allows a screening, it'll surely be a blast."

"Director Tim Miller and screenwriters Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick turn the superhero formula sideways. Deadpool advocates murder and revenge. When guns fire, brains splatter. This is no cutesy, do-gooder superhero for kids. Deadpool is the antihero and he loves it."

"Deadpool is entertaining as hell, erases bad memories of Reynold's Green Lantern (2011), and will be a great time at the movies, especially for fanboys. But it's been two days since I saw the movie and not much has stayed with me. I suppose that's the point, in which case, I'm okay not getting it."

"Deadpool is Fox's Guardians of the Galaxy, and it's opened a whole new gateway for the superhero genre. Whether you have a date or not, make sure you celebrate Valentine's Day at the multiplex playing this movie. It's a love story after all, with lubricated strap ons."

"It features gratuitous crotch shots, crass humor and a whole lot of gore. If you're looking for a conventional superhero movie, Deadpool might not be the right choice. But if you're looking for something different but equally entertaining, don't miss this one."

"This is pure brazen and sometimes surreal sexual onslaught meant to satisfy those who enjoy sarcasm and sex in equal measure. For those who'll enjoy this blitzkrieg of madness, this is the film that you watch on every Sunday, every holiday, after every satisfying sex encounter and on boring afternoons. You watch it once and you'll be begging to watch it again."

"Deadpool is subversive. It is also very keen to be seen as subversive. There's more cussing, violence and nudity here than in any previous comic book movie, but what registers even more is the film's constant vigilance against even the smallest of superhero tropes. As soon as a cliché raises its head, the film jumps on it, hitting it back with a wisecrack or a filthy joke or someone's head exploding. It is fascinating to see this sort of undercutting going on, like someone repeatedly sawing off the branch they're sitting on."
