Critic consensus

What 15 critics are saying

Most critics found 'Dunki' an emotionally engaging, warmly entertaining film with a socially conscious premise, praising its performances — particularly from the leads — and Pritam's score. Rajkumar Hirani's signature blend of humor and heart was seen as largely intact, though several reviewers noted the first half works better than the second, or vice versa. The most common criticisms centered on heavy-handed message delivery through voiceovers and monologues, a rushed conclusion, and a storytelling approach that some found formulaic and overly familiar. A minority of critics found the film unconvincing and overlong, but the broader consensus lands on a flawed yet rewarding watch.

    Film review ·

Dunki is buoyed by an array of flawless performances, with the lead actor and Taapsee Pannu, playing a woman who is far more than just the hero's romantic interest, leading the way through the ups and downs. It strikes a neat balance between heart, head and soul, crafting an emotionally engaging tale with its fair share of twists that do not strain credulity beyond reasonable limits.

his vaunted first collaboration with Rajkumar Hirani is mostly a crashing bore. I was hard put in the 161 minutes of 'Dunki's run-time to find anything that made me feel anything other than plain boredom or annoyance.
  3. India Today

    Film review ·

Dunki might not be Hirani's best work in comparison to 3 Idiots or PK, but it still entertains and leaves you with a warm and fuzzy feeling as you leave the theatre. Dunki's first half is layered and nuanced with the feel-good humour and simplistic approach that is signature Hirani.
  4. PinkVilla

    Film review ·

Rajkumar Hirani has created an impeccable fusion of his cinema and Shah Rukh Khan's. The result is Dunki, a film that has the ability to stand the test of time and be regarded as a modern-day classic. Dunki is a largely rewarding experience best served in theatres.
  5. The National (Abu Dhabi)

    Film review ·

Dunki doesn't dwell too much on the journey, however, but chooses instead to highlight the hopes and dreams of its characters, their motivations and the sacrifices they've had to make for what they think will be a better life. And he's done it again with Dunki, spotlighting one of the most politically sensitive issues of our time with great sensitivity and clarity.
  6. Times Of India

    Film review ·

Overall, 'Dunki' is a wholesome entertainer that's rousing, relevant, romantic and about returning to your roots. 'Dunki's' music by Pritam scores high when it comes to underlining every mood, arguably the composer has given the best Hindi movie music soundtrack of the year.
  7. IndieWire

    Film review ·

Hirani loves to make a film with a message — particularly one in which characters repeatedly declare the message in voiceovers, monologues, and songs. The forward momentum suffers from this, and from sections that are quickly explained via narration but otherwise skipped over. In the end, 'Dunki' undermines its own messaging, sandwiching a series of informative cards about donkey flights between a rushed conclusion and comedic coda.
  8. Filmfare

    Film review ·

Director Rajkumar Hirani takes time to find his feet. It's only in the second half, which has more dramatic and emotional scenes, that we feel the sure-footedness of the Hirani of old. The film rests solely on the shoulders of the performers and they all have brought their A game to the table.
  9. Rediff

    Film review ·

Dunki is high on ambition but its flimsy premise renders this nearly three hours long journey into farfetched adventures hard to believe, harder to buy into. The film-maker's tendency to get carried away and pull out all the stops to reach out to the emotional fools in the audience tries a tad too hard in Dunki.
  10. Film Companion

    Film review ·

To see Dunki, then, is to stare into this chasm with a lethargic vertigo. The central flux of the story itself is never convincing. Once he exits the film's stage, the second half becomes an emotional wasteland, lulling without tension, humour, or pathos.
  11. Hindustan Times

    Film review ·

Laced with director Rajkumar Hirani's signature style, Dunki rides high on emotions, with humour peppered in quantity that at times get too much to digest. Definitely not one of the best works from Hirani, yet Dunki effortlessly manages to keep you hooked.
  12. LiveMint

    Film review ·

Hirani and longtime collaborator Abhijat Joshi and Kanika Dhillon build simple ideas into comic set pieces that ripple into other scenes, a system of delayed punchlines and callbacks that's more formally impressive than actually funny. The problem with construction this meticulous is you can't help but see scaffolding everywhere. Dunki is a vacuum-packed 161 minutes, so bent on utilizing every moment that its very industry becomes oppressive.
  13. Scroll.in

    Film review ·

Dunki is more heehaw than ha ha hee hee. Broad comedy and tear-jerking moments – Hirani's strengths – are largely missing from his screenplay, written along with Abhijat Joshi and Kanika Dhillon. In the absence of compelling character arcs or a halfway realistic depiction of the complications involved in transporting humans across borders, the movie never travels below the surface.
  14. The Hindu

    Film review ·

The purpose and social concern is again laudable but the storytelling feels facile and laboured after a point, largely because Hirani doesn't want to test newer ways to put his point across. The spontaneity that we associate with his work is sadly missing.
