Critic consensus

What 14 critics are saying

Critics broadly received Jawan as an effective, crowd-pleasing masala entertainer that balances high-octane action with pointed political and social messaging. Shah Rukh Khan's screen presence and charisma were widely cited as central to the film's appeal, with several reviewers also noting Atlee's confident handling of large-scale set pieces and commercial formula. The most common reservation was the film's overstuffed, sprawling narrative — critics acknowledged it piles on subplots and lacks subtlety or sharpness. Still, the consensus holds that its scale, swagger, and earnest ambitions make it a rewarding theatrical experience.

Combining the in-your-face maximalism of director Atlee, and the come-get-me grizzled slit-eyed sexiness of star Shah Rukh Khan, Jawan is a pop-masala banger. Fashioned as an unabashed massy entertainer, Jawan slips in strong political messaging at every opportunity, making it a film which is very much of the moment.

Jawan is a strikingly meta vehicle in which a star communicates directly with his fan base and holds forth on themes that are crying out to be addressed. Jawan hits the bull's eye both as a movie that is out to entertain and a vehicle that demonstrates the power of a superstar endowed with a voice that is anything but ordinary.
  3. Filmfare

    Film review

Jawan is Shah Rukh Khan's most massy film as yet, and his most political. It's an action thriller which is loaded with social messages... The film provides wholesome entertainment and no expense is spared providing world-class action sequences, which look on par with any high grade Hollywood film.

Atlee serves a hardcore masala film that's not inventive or path-breaking by any standard but executes it well. He mixes this age-old success formula with his deadpan and dark humour, and things get pretty delectable in Jawan. Phenomenally entertaining and consistently engaging, Jawan is a complete masala potboiler that should be witnessed on a big screen.
  5. Rediff

    Film review ·

Beyond its comic-book entertainment chronicling the age-old war between good and evil, Jawan springs a real surprise when it boldly and directly points fingers at the ineffective government and appeals to recognise the power of the finger and vote. Jawan, where he's accompanied by a battery of women, reiterates he's got the audience wrapped around his finger in a high-octane political drama that compensates for its lack of sharps and slyness with oodles of swagger, style and soft barbs at the system.
  6. Gulf News

    Film review ·

Vigilante films that aim to shatter the establishment can be a bit exhausting, but when the clean-up is spearheaded by swagger-powered leads like Shah Rukh Khan and Nayanthara, the film gets a major shot in the arm. If you are willing to surrender to his movie-star magic, then you are likely to enjoy this vociferous vigilante fare a lot more.
  7. India Today

    Film review ·

Jawan is a big screen spectacle. It is flawed but at a time where everything is over-analysed, it makes for a good time at the cinemas. Ready or not, this is a ride that's definitely worth taking.
  8. TheGuardian

    Film review ·

A star vehicle that functions like a runaway train, Jawan covers a lot of ground in surprising fashion at full throttle – but that's also a polite way of admitting it's utterly all over the place. There's ego involved, undeniably, but few stars in any cinema could model such radically diverse hats with this much flair.
  9. Hindustan Times

    Film review

Jawan is a wholesome watch that won't give you any dull moment. Atlee makes sure he doesn't disappoint audiences in his Hindi directorial debut, as he blends all the elements of commercial cinema to build a massy entertainer.
  10. IndieWire

    Film review ·

"Jawan" is very, very political. It makes some heavy-handed statements about civic duty, but it asks those in power to do better just as strongly as it urges viewers to channel their SRK enthusiasm into making real change. It's a doozy to review without spoiling, as it's a film that must be experienced on a massive screen with a massive crowd.
  11. LiveMint

    Film review ·

Jawan works best as validation of the Hindi film-watching public's immaculate Pavlovian response... When all the shouts have been shouted and all the whistles whistled, what are we left with? Probably a very successful film—and a frustratingly basic one.
  12. RogerEbert

    Film review

"Jawan" will probably delight Khan's established fans, and maybe uninitiated viewers, too, if only because he's comfortably playing the hits, now with somewhat greater conviction and a little more polish. The main reason "Jawan" doesn't deliver more than what Khan has previously delivered is because its creators seemingly included every masala-style subplot they could think of. Still, "Jawan" is unlike Khan's last two comeback trail stops because its creators are better at navigating its many hairpin twists and turns.

Atlee's guts-and-glycerine saga has big names from the Hindi and Tamil industries, a crowd-pleasing theme of vigilante justice, slickly filmed action set pieces, snarky humour and earnest social messaging topped by Shah Rukh Khan in peak charismatic mode. Fleet despite its 169-minute runtime, with sequence after sequence designed to draw whistles as well as wring out tears, Jawan deftly leaps from one incredulous moment to the next.
