Kabali

2016 · PipingHotViews · Jul 2016

This is not a movie for the die-hard Rajni fans expecting their hero to whoop the baddies, bring the roof down with his comic sense or play the universe savior – but this is one for those who would love to see Rajni in a matured role that prognosticates his abilities on screen - what the star is capable of at this stage of his career in a well-presented story. Is our movie-watching public mature enough to understand and accept that this is one of the better performances of a star who does more than enough even without doing what he usually does? – that is something that the money coffers will answer.

It is not often we get films in India that have Sci-Fi, Action, Romance, Comedy & emotional drama bundled into a single film but still not fall under this overly abused tag of 'Masala Film'. This is where Vikram Kumar and actor-producer Suriya score by giving us a fantastic whirlwind experience over the course of 160 odd minutes.

Kanithan

Kanithan

2016 · PipingHotViews · Feb 2016

Kanithan is the classic case of a commercializing a wonderful core story that spoils the tempo and ends up being unable to sustain audience interest by completely messing up the third act. What could have been a taut thriller ends up exasperating the viewer as the curtains are drawn!

Thoongaavanam

Thoongaavanam

2015 · PipingHotViews · Nov 2015

Kamal Haasan as CK Diwakar rightly steals the limelight. A tranquil introduction and an even subdued start to his role doesn't really tell the audience what's in store from this evergreen performer. He plays a role that aptly fits his age and makeover. As a narcotics cop and a caring father he juggles between the roles with an affluence that only this man can manage.

Uppu Karuvaadu

Uppu Karuvaadu

2015 · PipingHotViews · Nov 2015

Uppu Karuvadu works primarily as it has the audacity to cast actors in unconventional roles putting them in unusual situations & letting them mouth dialogues that seem natural. All this set in the midst of a premise-conflict-resolution template means fun film overall!

Thani Oruvan

Thani Oruvan

2015 · PipingHotViews · Aug 2015

Thani Oruvan is one of those rare Good vs Evil films that manages to toe the line between Commercial and Masala exceedingly well. Even if the taut script and the impactful dialogues do not impress you, it is guaranteed that Aravind Swamy's superlative performance will bowl you over!

Gour Hari Dastaan

Gour Hari Dastaan

2015 · PipingHotViews · Aug 2015

Gour Hari Dastaan is a film that deserves a wide release for staying so close to the truth yet never being flat or disengaging. The fact that the film was able to arouse the National Spirit of the audience without being ever manipulative or preachy makes it not just award-worthy but National-Award worthy.

Masaan

Masaan

2015 · PipingHotViews · Jul 2015

Masaan is an audacious tale of mistakes, mishaps & redemption in life. The perfect choice of locations (Banares for letting go & Allahabad for confluence), able performances from the cast and the script replete with other symbolic subtleties make it a classic debut for its promising director.

Bāhubali: The Beginning

Bāhubali: The Beginning

2015 · PipingHotViews · Jul 2015

S. S. Rajamouli has managed to produce a mighty masterpiece, scaling high in all areas that one can expect him to. If Magadheera was all about his story telling skills, Baahubali is more proof of what he can do with serious technical brilliance at his disposal. This will definitely rank as one of the path-breakers in Indian Cinema and a priceless feather in the caps of all those associated with the movie!

Papanasam

Papanasam

2015 · PipingHotViews · Jul 2015

We live in an age where family-oriented movies are hardly on display and very rarely a selling commodity. But once in a while, there comes out a torch-bearer of a movie that reminds everyone that you do not need a hero with six-pack abs or skimpily-clad heroines to define a winning formula -Papanasam is one such wonder, a complete family entertainer made with loads of passion! Now that's enough reason not to miss this impressive movie!

Indru Netru Naalai

Indru Netru Naalai

2015 · PipingHotViews · Jun 2015

Indru Netru Naalai once again proves that big stars & high budgets are not required for making an engaging movie. The content is extremely cohesive & the top-notch VFX helps in sustaining the believability of the whole fantasy ride.

Masss

Masss

2015 · PipingHotViews · May 2015

While the start was heartening to see, with an established director charting up an unusual script for a commercial star & the star going all out with it, we get uncomfortably overloaded towards the end as film sags and leaves little impact because of it trying to handle too many things at a time – much like an aerated soft drink.

Demonte Colony

Demonte Colony

2015 · PipingHotViews · May 2015

In spite of losing punch towards the end, Demonte Colony is one those rare films where Thought, Writing & Execution have come together admirably with the ingenious set-pieces & smart technical support proving to be a solid backbone.

36 Vayadhinile

36 Vayadhinile

2015 · PipingHotViews · May 2015

In spite of being a little too superficial due to under-developed subplots & supporting cast, films like '36 Vayadhinilae' are a breath of fresh air to Tamizh cinema. It touches the right chords courtesy of a fabulous performance from Jyothika & razor sharp dialogues from Viji.

Purampokku Engira Podhuvudamai

Purampokku Engira Podhuvudamai

2015 · PipingHotViews · May 2015

Purampokku Engira Podhuvudamai' has its moments when the inmates & police officers nonchalantly trade law points at each other and the cat-and-mouse game between the Jailer & the Prisoner with the Hangman playing the innocent foil. However, the engagement factor goes for a toss as the film tries to take on too many issues.

Uttama Villain

Uttama Villain

2015 · PipingHotViews · May 2015

A Kamal Haasan movie is always a curiosity-kindler, and Uthama Villan is again the perfect fodder for the hunger and passion of any cinema fanatic! Touching areas of immortality, this meta-movie featuring late legend K .Balachander is simply the best tribute Kamal could have paid to his mentor and creator for its perfection in making and class in execution – Now that's more than enough reason not to miss this one of a kind clinical performance!

Vai Raja Vai

Vai Raja Vai

2015 · PipingHotViews · May 2015

These days it is pretty easy for any movie with a usual plot to be branded as 'New wine in an old bottle'. But OK Kanmani for many reasons doesn't fall into that category. When the lead pair takes the screen by storm and you have some real heavyweights wielding the camera and the microphone, you can bet your money on the entertainment that you are bound to receive. Add the heart-warming BGMs and renditions to the mix, romance just went up a notch!!

Kanchana 2

Kanchana 2

2015 · PipingHotViews · Apr 2015

This movie is just another ghost story built on its tested formulaic story with ample humour. While trying to simply reap the success of its predecessor without making an effort to better itself, it ends up serving the same old cold soup which the audience would rather gulp down and get over with it instead of relishing it – Kanchana 2 is not someone who you would want to meet again!

Nannbenda

Nannbenda

2015 · PipingHotViews · Apr 2015

It is bewildering how movies like Nannbenda get the nods of so many experienced stars before going on the floors. With such a wafer-thin storyline & inconsistent characterization, the film is a total let-down.

Yennai Arindhaal...

Yennai Arindhaal...

2015 · PipingHotViews · Feb 2015

Gautham has successfully carved chapters of the third episode in a police officer's life, giving it a premise similar to the first two, building a fresh structure on top and fitting Ajith perfectly into it. Get to know Sathyadev, you will like him – Just like you liked Anbuchelvan & Raghavan!

I

I

2015 · PipingHotViews · Jan 2015

In more than half a decade of Tamil movie industry it has always been observed that the weight of expectations vested on a movie is directly proportional to the disenchantment of the average movie-watching public. But 'I' breaks this trend majestically. 'I' is definitely not the best script among Shankar's films but the average script is lifted by the extraordinary performance of Vikram & impressive technical wizardry.

Lingaa

Lingaa

2014 · PipingHotViews · Dec 2014

Albeit the presence of Rajni's charisma and a strong storyline, a director of K.S.Ravikumar's standards is let down by some poor quality scenes and an atrocious climax sequence. This sure isn't one of Rajni's best but by all means one can safely bet on the 'Rajinikanth' factor to carry it to Box-office success!

Appuchi Gramam

Appuchi Gramam

2014 · PipingHotViews · Dec 2014

Appuchi Graamam is just like any other ordinary village that you will see – but an extraordinary situation, forces it to change on its head and its story when captured in a good mix of an interesting master plot, decent performances and an impressively short run time, makes for a brilliant on-screen presentation! This is one village you won't regret visiting!!

Naaigal Jaakirathai

Naaigal Jaakirathai

2014 · PipingHotViews · Nov 2014

Naaigal Jakkirathai is a sensibly made film with a dog as a prime character which is a rarity in Tamizh cinema. It could have been a riveting thriller had some more depth been added to the characters.

Kaaviya Thalaivan

Kaaviya Thalaivan

2014 · PipingHotViews · Nov 2014

The specialty of the film is – The villain in the film is not without his nobility & the hero here is not without his faults! In bringing out memorable showings from his cast & technical crew & making Kaaviya Thalaivan a stand-out film in their resumes, Vasantha Balan elevates his own level.

Vanmham

Vanmham

2014 · PipingHotViews · Nov 2014

Though the intent is just not there from the creative department to differ from the usual, it never ceases from disappointing the audience with its placidity. Barring few moments of brilliance from Vijay Sethupathi and the refreshingly native setup in Kanyakumari, this one is sure to take revenge on your senses! – staying true to its title "Vanmham", the intent for revenge!

Poojai

Poojai

2014 · PipingHotViews · Oct 2014

Poojai is a template masala action film from Hari with smatterings of love, comedy & family sentiment set in a well-designed plot. While it is not compelling, it certainly is a watchable festival entertainer.

Kaththi

Kaththi

2014 · PipingHotViews · Oct 2014

When you have an actor who is well known for mass entertainers and a director who is known for providing marketable scripts – what can you expect from the duo? If you are thinking of a movie that will be just for the eyes – you need to watch this to understand what the director wants to convey!!! 'Kaththi' starts out as a blunt piece of iron, but is honed all along and emerges as a Sharp Sickle!

Yaan

Yaan

2014 · PipingHotViews · Oct 2014

With great hype comes greater burden of meeting expectations – 'Yaan' falls prey to this adage as it flounders at the start and fails to keep on its feet as it is dealt several body blows due to a weak script, poor execution and ill-advised knots in the storyline. A good one to give a miss!

Madras

Madras

2014 · PipingHotViews · Oct 2014

For most of us it's just a wall – For some it's an identity. When the fight for identity breaks out from the confinements of individual desires, there can't be neutrals. 'Madras' is a uniquely presented tale of a neutral person who is forced to take a side, presented in a natural yet impactful style!
