Brimming with smart ideas and powered by the performances of its two principals, it's a shame this promising film comes undone by the Curse of the Second Half. Watch it though for bravely treading new ground.
‘Shamitabh’ had the potential to use irony and knowingness and a self-awareness, and the presence of the most durable star in Bollywood whose velvet-and-iron rumble has become part of the national soundtrack, to give us an unforgettable story of ego and identity, rejection and acceptance, success and failure. There are a few moments which sparkle, and we laugh in acknowledgement. But the rest of it is overpowered by unabashed reverence.
That, in essence, is the problem with Shamitabh: it spends all its time explaining its own jokes.And that never sounds right, no matter the voice.
Daanish and Amitabh are well-enacted, strong characters. Shamitabh is a lovingly crafted film that doesn’t quite pan out. Which is a shame, because there is much to savour here.
Despite flaws, Balki is definitely a brave director who has attempted something new in Shamitabh. The concept is novel and he deserves a pat on the back for it. He loses his grip somewhere during the transition from sarcasm to irony, still he gives the glimpses into his latent talent. Certainly an able director.
Shamitabh’s strength lies in the mighty performances of its two leading men, which to a large extent fill the holes in the plot and allow us to look beyond the many flights of fancy.
Shamitabh is recommended only for its storyline, the quality of the performances and its technical brilliance.While Bachchan is indeed the selling point of the film, Shamitabh might have benefitted had Balki gone a little easier on his obsession with the ageless superstar.
...amidst the high-wattage attention around the Dhanush-Amitabh pairing, less is paid to Akshara, whose performance, although sincere, sometimes looks a tad banal.As does the film occasionally, a pity because Shamitabh's striking story could leave you speechless.
R Balki holds the story together and keeps you entertained through this two hours and twenty minute film. The concept itself is quite different and works very well. Using Bachchan's popular voice seems like a brilliant idea.
...even as Balki guides his third film to his trademark mawkish route, the effect is nowhere the same as Paa for the heart is missing.
Shamitabh may not appeal to the masses for its unique storyline and is more so for the niche audiences. The brilliant performances by Dhanush and Amitabh Bachchan and an emotional climax make up for this faulty plot that drags post interval. For its novel ideas and stellar showcasing of acting talents.
SHAMITABH has an out-of-the-box and unusual plot that will appeal only to a niche audience. Go for it only if you are a hardcore Bachchan fan.
With films like the eminently likable Cheeni Kum and Paa, R Balki established himself as a director who had something different to say and tell. He continues in the same vein with Shamitabh but this time there are some hiccups with the screenplay, it is just not meaty enough for a two and half hour film. He does get marks though for trying and credit to the leading men for saving the day.
Shamitabh is a film unlike any other. Its themes are dark and deep. Its observations are candid and funny. Like any good film, its a mixture of art and mart. Songs like Piddly si baatein and She sha sha mi mi entertain. And then there are wonderful reflections on the film world. In a scene Dhanush conveys to Akshara that the film they're making is too arty and not commercial enough. Same goes for Shamitabh. It's a wonderful idea, straight from the heart. But end of the day its not a crowd pleaser. It is though a moving argument to why we love a phenomenon called Amitabh Bachchan.
The film works at some levels. The absolutely cool story idea and Balki's tongue firmly in cheek look at the buzzing world of Bollywood are the plus points of the film. The scene leading to the 'Piddley' song sequence as well as the song itself are the best indications of a well executed satire.
Shamitabh is not just a homage to the great Bachchan baritone it is also a magnificent ode to the theme of human mortality . The love of Bollywood (sorry, Mr Bachchan) runs across the plot in frenzied rhythms. The two principal actors play out their conjoined karmaswith a passion that burns your soul.

Big B's appearance on the 70 mm screen has been far & few, so it was quite natural that there is a tremendous deal of hype & anticipation surrounding his latest release "Shamitabh". The promos has been awesome as the Amitabh-Danush combo seemed quite interesting & with Balki calling the shots, it seemed like a recipe for success. So were the promos a true reflection of the final product???
The film unfolds with the premiere of "Lifebuoy", the debut release of Shamitabh alias Daanish (Danush) the latest sensation in Bollywood. So how did a bus conductor from a small village manage to make his mark in the film industry??? If that was astonishing enough, Daanish had a much bigger secret which the media didn't know & that he was mute. Daanish's obsession for films began right from his childhood & his dreams landed him in Mumbai, but as expected his handicap proved to be his stumbling block. One of his altercations with the studio people caught the eye of the assistant director, Akshara (Akshara Hasan) who seeing the potential in him, promises to help him out. With the help of medical technology, Daanish was able to speak but it required the help of another individual. Eventually their search for an apt voice led them to Amitabh Sinha (Big B), an irritable drunkard with a formidable baritone who lived in a cemetery. Their combination was an absolute winner as the audience lapped it up, but their bloated egos was getting in the way of their success. So will they be able to keep their egos in check???
R Balki had enthralled the audience with his previous ventures be it "Cheeni Kum" or "Paa", the latter even winning Big B his 3rd National Award (which I felt Lalettan deserved more for "Thanmatra"). Even in his latest endeavour, the film starts off in a promising manner with the master stroke being the interactions between Danush & Big B which were hilarious. However after that initial buildup, the script just meanders along aimlessly offering nothing new before culminating in a rather predictable climax. The legend, Illayaraja had composed the music which interestingly happened to be his 999th album & to be frank, it wasn't great though I absolutely loved the title track rendered by Caralisa Monteiro. P. C Sreeram has done a fine job with the visuals while Hemanti Sarkar could have done a better job with the editing.
The legend, Big B has done a brilliant job & will be in pole position to sweep all the awards once this year comes to an end. Danush has done a fine job as he has been really effective in conveying his emotions without his voice. Add to that, it's quite difficult to match upto a doyen like AB & he has done that with elan. Inspite of being a debutant, Akshara Hasan has done a decent job & augurs well for the future.
Verdict: With no major releases in the horizon, "Shamitabh" should be able to rake in a decent amount of moolah. The film does have its share of flaws with a rather mediocre & repetitive latter half, which will surely hamper the viewing experience. However, it is still worth a watch for Big B's performance!!!
The film starts with a proper flashback montage telling a concise story of a mute, aspiring actor and film enthusiast Danish (Dhanush). The fact that he is a superstar now increases the excitement. He meets Akshara (same name), an assistant director and what follows is although slightly unbelievable (literally, in its premise), it is immensely enjoyable. The muteness vanishes and we welcome Amitabh's (same first name) baritone voice talking for Danish while he acts his character.
The only things that bothered me are one, why would an amateur assistant director help out an aspirant? and two, the voice technology. Of course, it is not a foolproof way for a mute person to speak his feelings. But, all these thoughts withers away as the narrative indulges you into it, demanding your attention about a consequential rags-to-riches story coupled with a mysterious source of envy.
The film amazingly addresses issues of that of envy and ego and how these two feelings can cause self-destruction, creating waves that also affect the people closer to one. The singleton phenomenon Shamitabh turns into two different entities as the film unfolds toward climax. The film basically acts as an intellectual spoof of the cinema industry, and it does it with finesse.
Dhanush is marvelous, and the measure of his excellence is only competed by his co-star Bachchan Sr, who displays a splendid air of being a drunkard wannabe. His mystery could have been demystified, given the importance it plays in the story construction, but it is forgivable. Akshara Haasan did not impress me much because clearly she cannot pull off romantic scenes properly. She may be the chip off the old block, but has a long way in order to master the art of acting.
Other than having a literally impossible setup, Shamitabh excels in all other departments, from the beautiful art setup and production sets to the beat music (by the maverick Illayaraja), from a fine camera job to inventive writing by Balki. He has carved out a fine plot, often taking potshots at recent filmmaking trends viz. masala nonsense, illogical songs (and even more illogical videos), etc. But, these potshots are not cringe-worthy, instead they will make you laugh. The film has a great amount of humor if you watch closely, and helped by Bachchan's fabulous dialogs delivery, you will roll on the floor laughing.
BOTTOM LINE: Despite a drag in the funnier second half, Shamitabh does not disappoint at all. Bachchan's few solo sequences made me yawn, but I am ready to call this the first good Bollywood film of the year. Go watch the next show, because this is one drama we have all been talking about haven't seen. You will be enthralled by the catchy songs.
Can be watched with a typical Indian family? YES (if few expletives from the mouths of Bachchan Sr and Haasan's second daughter are okay with the heads of the family).
R Balki has again come up with a different concept after Cheeni Kum and Paa. It talks about the relationship between two people – one is the voice of another, one cannot do without the other. One becomes a superstar with another’s voice. How that need-based relationship is overpowered with complexities like ego, rivalry, unhealthy competitiveness, conflicts, hunger for identity, fame, recognition etc. The concept is uniquely presented with two great actors on screen, thought drag is felt in some parts of the movie.
It is the story of mute Daanish (Dhanush) who dreams of only and only Bollywood right from his childhood. When the teacher teaches in school in regard to Mahatma Gandhi and Kasturba Gandhi, he relates to Ben Kingslay and Rohini Hattangidi. Daanish expresses himself with great intensity through actions. ‘Actions speak louder than words’ fits him. Daanish reaches Mumbai with lot of dreams in his eyes. He gatecrashes to meet different directors, but all in vain. Then enters into the scene Akshara Haasan, an assistant to a filmmaker. She is able to identify the intensity in Daanish and genuinely wants to help him to get a break.
Akshara becomes instrumental in getting the voice of Amitabh Sinha (Amitabh Bachchan) for Daanish with the medical advancement. Amitabh is alcoholic and eccentric in this movie, plays a failed actor, who was snubbed due to his baritone, lives in a graveyard.
And a superstar Shamitabh is born– combination of Daanish and Amitabh. Why the name Shamitabh was chosen and how the technology supported Daanish with Amitabh’s voice, let me not convey everything.
The movie is about the ups and downs faced by Shamitabh. The movie also talks about how important it is to realize that an Individual’s success is never his or her only success, but many are instrumental in one’s success. If we stop acknowledging others’ contribution towards our success, we might not be able to sustain the success. It is all about completing one another.
How Amitabh faces the identity crisis when Dhanush becomes a celebrity? How Daanish at times gets thankless and opportunist is also projected in the movie. How both of them deal with one another have some interesting moments.
The unconventional story line along with the cast could have done more wonders. I felt that the relationship between Amitabh and Daanish could have been explored a little more. I also felt that the song Piddli by Amitabh Bachchan was diluted with the way it was shot (may be the need of the script). Also, the drag in certain scenes could have been avoided.
Akshara is good. Dhanush is very good, whose face speaks volumes. Amitabh, does he even need any comments???
