Critic Consensus

Critical reception for Kaabil is mixed-to-moderate, with the majority of reviewers converging on Hrithik Roshan's performance as the film's primary asset, frequently describing it as among his career best work. Several critics also noted the technical competence of the cinematography and sound design. Common criticisms include a sluggish pace, weak or dated music from Rajesh Roshan, shoddy VFX, and logical inconsistencies that undermine the film's ambitions as a gritty thriller.

"Some of the action seems far-fetched and the way Rohan uses his ability to mimic voices in order to create disarray among the cops and the thugs is near-farcical. Yet, when he gets down to committing the perfect crime, leaving no trace behind of the destructive act, Kaabil acquires some momentum and heft."

"Kaabil is a film about love and its abrupt send-off. It is a violent film. But the emphasis is on the damage done to the soul of the wronged man. It must be seen for Hrithik Roshan's incredibly moving performance and for the unexpected glimpse it provides into its director's romantic personality."

"The highpoint of 'Kaabil' is that, the plot of the film is very okay but the screenplay is intelligently played out. The film won't bore you even for a second. 'Kaabil' is overwhelming, magical and a feel good film. The film is one of the most interesting revenge sagas made in the recent times."

"Kaabil has most of the right ingredients for a thriller - a cerebral protagonist, clever fight sequences, some scattered wit, brilliant casting and immersive screenplay among others. The fight choreography and methodologies, and Rohan's whole blind-fighter role have the bearing of Daredevil or Batman. A little meandering in the direction in the second half, the pointless item number and some holes in logic at the end spoil what might otherwise been a remarkable film, but Kaabil is still worth a one-time watch."

"Both halves put together Kaabil serves up a staple fare of romance, action and drama. There's some peppy music on offer as well. But none of the film's frills match up to the Hrithik Roshan's efforts. He carries this film on his capable shoulders. His perfectly nuanced performance is the reason you'll enjoy the thrills of Kaabil."

"What doesn't work is the pace! It is awfully slow and between one scene and another, there is a light years' gap. The superfluous dance numbers are nothing more than Rajesh Roshan going back to his young years to end the secret of his magic. The VFX work is shoddy and Gupta's tinted Instagram-filterish view of every scene could get a bit tiring. Since the editing has its own share of flaws, the film in the second half makes you dreary."

"There is a lot of realism missing in what's supposed to be a gritty thriller. Locations seem semi-fake. In portions, the film itself appears slightly cold, and thoda sa plastic. But if you were to keep your eyes glued to the screen and follow the blind man's graphite walking stick right down to the picture's climax, I'm fairly certain you won't be disappointed. "A blind couple is terrorised by local goons: the wife is raped and the cops are unhelpful because the perpetrator is the brother of a local politician. The young blind man decides to take the law into his own hands. No one takes him seriously because of his disability. But he takes his revenge slowly and surely and the police are unable to pin the murders of the rapists on him. This revenge drama is perhaps Hrithik Roshan's best work, but hampered by a deathly slow pace."

"The boy-meets-girl story of the first half hour is a cloying affair. Rajesh Roshan's dated soundtrack consists songs that drag the proceedings. It doesn't help that Gupta, who hearts item numbers in clubs, throws in a terrible one in "Saara Zamaana". The sudden mawkish tone in between the action furthermore disrupts Kaabil. Much like Mohenjo Daro, which showed that one man alone cannot save a civilisation, Hrithik Roshan alone cannot save the film."

It reminds me 15-20 Years old Indian movies on story line that some neighborhood goon rapes heroin followed by revenge of hero, those movies still much better to show contemporary life along with rapes and revenge. However, this movie make us suffer (I mean it) for complete first half to watch undesired persecution to A blind woman until she suicides. 2nd part not that unbearable as it focuses how a blind man take a revenge using his fighting skill and copying anyone's voice. Hrithik Roshan and Yami Gautam played their role very well, but can't help with a 20 years old Indian story pattern. Though such incident is not impossible in our country, where rough politician keep government official in their pocket and do all such things with common people. But message being passed by movie is also not correct, she choose to suicide after knowing it will happen (rape) frequently, instead she should decide to kill such people for making her life miserable. I would ( and people like me ) still have liked the move, had the tragic part which was lasted for half of the movie, would have limited only for 5-10 minutes.

After copying all his films from foreign films (mostly koreans), Sanjay Gupta shud die in a handful of water. The south korean films r the best in the revenge genre. So this time Sanjay wanted to convey to the koreans, see v can make a better revenge movie than u. V can make a physically disabled guy go on a revenge spree. To be honest, this time he copied from a tamil film, Iravu suriyan n added a dash of Korean film Broken. Saw this alone in a theatre. Sadly no one gav me company. Firstly Hrithik cannot act. No doubt he is a good dancer but v r talking about actors n not dancers. There r dozens of better dancers on the streets of UK n US. I mean what was the need to add a dance sequence in a movie whr the leads r shown as physically disabled. Is he that obsessed n narcissistic about himself being a dancer. One thing i wanna ask the director. The leads r not shown as learning the particular dance or being the practitioners of it n voila suddenly they start dancing without quite having learnt it. The first half is boring. The plot is melodramatic at its best n more like the 80s a la Rape- Revenge. I thot it was always Mithundas sister getting raped n how revenge follows. In one 90s film, Devgans sister too is raped n revenge follows. Dude, recently even in one Salmans film, his sister gets raped. So this time Hrithiks sister, oops his wife gets raped by some powerful people n ....

MYJan 2017

Hrithik Roshan tries hard and offers us a great performance but the film plays strictly by numbers and you can see everything coming from a mile. The movie begins with romance between two people who cannot see which is full of cliché and the scenes that just makes you cringe. I have seen old serials having way better romance development scenarios between normal couple, but this was between two blind people. It should give you this warm-touching feelings, but it catastrophically suffers from awkward expressions and dreadful acting, then their relationship goes into fast-forward pace in a song and both are ultimately married except a tragedy befalls the couple, and then things gone awry. -And this is where movie truly suffers from, you see at every point movie desperately tries to make it look serious and dark except it fails at every point. You have an item song, right after a blind guy's blind wife gets raped and I should mention she got raped twice, and then she committed suicide. I was feeling so frustrated at that point towards the writers who I don't know what crack they were smoking when they thought of adding an item song when the movie suddenly goes so dark and negative. As a Man, I just felt terrible and horrible, we just had seen a blind wife brutally getting raped. I can't imagine how women felt when they went to watch this movie. After that, we have your typical mouse and cat revenge story with tons and tons of plot holes, at that point all I felt is that this movie is playing with my emotions and feelings. 1. The very first plot hole is that A post-mortem is carried out as soon as possible after the suicide on behalf of the coroner as part of the investigation to establish the cause of death. It usually takes place within one or two days of the death, but none of that happened. I guess someone forgot how the laws and rules work before writing the story. 2.The main reason it turns into a revenge story because the protagonist (Hrithik) couldn't bring justice to his late wife because the person who raped his wife (Rohit) is the brother of Ronit who is actually a minister which is established this late into the story out of nowhere and misuses his corrupt powers to control the cops. Okay, I might have understand this if this movie was made in 70s-80s, but this is 2016, no one gets away with such brutal crime these days, and he was not even a big shot. He is just some small unknown corporate minister, don't ask me, the movie never tells us that either. 3. From start till the end, you will constantly feel that the movie is missing something, it just feels so condensed, the movie repeatedly goes back and forth between the home where Hrithik lives, the police station, the telephone booth and one or two more new locations where Hrithik takes his revenge on the culprit which are exactly the same locations that you will see in the first half. The movie never goes or develop further beyond that, it just feels like a B-grade budget movie. 4. The movie takes no effort into developing any sort of character development or their personality like why the protagonist is blind where are his parents, why the Heroine is blind where are her parents? The villains in this movie has no motivations either, they are plainly dumb like a villains drawn by a school kid to further glorify protagonist. 5. As for the revenge, the protagonist comes with a brilliant plan, he has a talent for mimicry and can make lots of different voices and noises, so his plan is to make culprits fight each other by mimicking their voices magically and that's ladies and folks the brilliant revenge plan the writers thought of. I thought they were making a serious movie, but at this point it felt like a cheap comedy movie. 6. His revenge is all about killing, but he never thinks of exposing them to the media or public, so that the people can realize, how corrupt is everyone and he will be doing a great job for other women and couples, so that they won't have to go through what he went through. He even completely forgot about the cops who took money from the minister, so that they won't take his case. He even befriends one of them later into the story, WTH. You should be killing those cops too if one of them did their job right, your wife might be alive right now. 7. The worst part is the conclusion when the cops discovers that it was after all the protagonist doing all the murders, so to gather all the proves they check the call recording and went to the phone booth where he makes all those calls. So to match person, the cop takes out Hrithik's photo to ask whether he comes in daily to make regular calls. It was like the whole cop force was depending on this one alone proof, but the guy turned out to be a blind too and everyone returned empty-handed. So let me get this straight, are you telling me that in one small location Hrithik manage to find a blind woman and also a blind person who coincidentally takes care of a local phone booth too. Is Hrithik really is blind? How did he manage to find an other blind person, but guess what? The movie doesn't bother to explain that to you either. :Honestly, I can go on and on about how bad this movie is and Can Hrithik Roshan act? No question about it. Can Hrithik hack it, in Kaabil, a film that gives him every opportunity to gain lost ground? That's a toughie.

KIJan 2017

Disclaimer: I don't write reviews mostly. I'll usually just give my ratings and keep my mouth shut but this movie. Damn. I'm not going to be a critic and use unnecessary big words to keep it simple. I'm going to start with the mindset an average person has while going to watch any Bollywood movie. It's not like you're expecting much. It seemed a little different if you ignore the "daredevil" aspect of it. Hritik and yami play blind couple. Now the film focuses on that aspect a lot. Nothing against it but we get it, blind peeps are capable of doing stuff. Now it's just pushing it when you make them dance like pros 30 mins in, everyone knows Hritik is a good dancer but seriously? Now two songs in, they both are madly in love but then the world takes a giant crap on them cause Bollywood, rape, corruption. They all go perfectly together since the 90s. she gets raped. No one takes her seriously cause shes blind and people bad cliché. 2 days in, after the rape she commits suicide. Plot twist is she got raped again. Same guys. The director runs out of ideas pretty soon I see. Long story short, Hritik seeks Revenge, no one would help him cause corruption and politics, obviously. That's the topic Bollywood jerk offs too. Now the part which probably tricked all the audience to watch this pile of cringe. How does a blind man take Revenge? What tricks are going to be involved? What great plans this mind would pull off to keep the audience on the edge? You would think this movie is going to pull off some "fifth element" plot twists. WRONG. he calls them to different places cause he's an amazing voice actor and kills them. Cause Bollywood. At least daredevil gave us a story about some chemical crap which made the protagonist strong. I can go on about goofs, clichés and basically the idea of how moronic the writing is but if I waste more time thinking about this movie, they've won

TEJan 2017

Hrithik Roshan needed a much-needed push to his acting career, considering his personal problems and an embarrassing attempt at recreating history (read Mohenjo Daro (2016)) had put a few red marks on his report card. Sanjay Gupta helps him here, with enough support from the Roshan clan.

Rohan (Hrithik Roshan), a dubbing artist, and Supriya (Yami Gautam), a pianist and NGO worker, are a visually challenged couple who are in love and have decided to marry. They begin their married life with much pomp and circumstance, along with their friends, with the hope of starting a better life together. However, horror knocks on their door the right next day when local goon Amit (Rohit Roy) and his friend sexually assault Supriya, shattering their lives forever. Sardonically, Rohan is more devastated than Supriya, and decides to avenge, after regretting his previous decision to marry, at all.

For starters, there is definitely a lot of heart in the film, with Rohan overacting to the core to impress Supriya. Soon, the focus shifts from their delicate romance to the idea of people mocking those who are disabled. Amit and his friend are both repugnant in their actions and words, and do not mind speaking their mind, especially when Supriya, or women in general, is the subject. The makers probably wanted to show the aftermath of rape, by sampling (or rather simplifying) disability, but handle it rather clumsily. There is no other excuse to create this film which has shades of cliché, mockery, and anti-feminism.

Viewers are guaranteed to feel angry at what ensues after the assault, taking the torch from the scene of act to the police station to the local minister's mansion. It is the usual flow of narration where police apathy and corruption barge in and make you boil. Nonetheless, it does not pass muster if the Roshans had wanted to show the stark reality about the condition of women in a country where the idea of feminism is muddled, and patriarchy and dash of fascism is at an all-time high. It addresses one too many social issues, and then moves on to the vengeance part - which is plain old sweetness.

Although Roshan looks like he's straight out of the Koi... Mil Gaya (2003) sets, he performs well, and is one of the many reasons why the film never bores. Gautam is decent, as well, but it is her facial expressions that is at great display here. The Roy brothers are great, with the elder one typecast and the younger one doing a film after a long time. Their characters are perfectly vindictive, and give too many causes for Rohan to fight back. Other supporting actors like Narendra Jha (also seen in Rahul Dholakia's Raees (2017)), Suresh Menon, and Girish Kulkarni (last seen in Nitesh Tiwari's Dangal (2016)) are all above average and portray their characters with much diligence.

With arresting music and some nicely-shot sequences, the film is sure to keep you at the edge if you are not a feminist. For people who are disturbed at how the makers carve the aftermath of rape, it is best to avoid the film and wait for Sankalp Reddy's The Ghazi Attack (2017). There is this one particular scene, had it been handled properly, would have impressed me a lot. Where after the horrendous scene, Supriya goes to Rohan and tries to calm him, apologizing for not being "the way she was" anymore and Rohan does not reply. The consequence of this scene is rather dreadful, but the writers fail to provide a good explanation as to why Rohan fell silent that moment, as if he was in pain more than his wife - which is factually incorrect and a bad thing to represent.

It has similarities with a lot of recent films such as Sriram Raghavan's Badlapur (2015), Nishikant Kamat's Drishyam (2015), and Priyadarshan's Malayalam film Oppam (2016), but that doesn't mean it's not worth your money or time. Yeah, you do feel Rohan's targets were only the bare minimum and he should have targeted more people, but you cannot choose unless we get interactive cinema in 3017.

BOTTOM LINE: Sanjay Gupta's "Kaabil" is a lot better than his 2014 cold dunk, Jazbaa. It will cause you to emote the same way you react reading newspaper headlines these days. Along with favorable performances and a well-executed story-line, this one is, wait for it, better than its competition. Buy a DVD later or maybe go for that weekday afternoon show. PRJan 2017

Releasing the same day as Raees, Sanjay Gupta's and Rakesh Roshan's emotional and nerve- wracking venture is a grisly, gutsy, edgy and satisfying venture for those who were waiting for such genre. Apart from bringing Hrithik back to success with tremendous performance, it gives you nail-biting moments that make your pulse stand still for a couple of seconds before it goes berzerk. Hrithik reprises everything that he is known for - a formidable screen presence, adrenaline-pumping energy, and compelling emotion. Yami Gautam plays her part naturally without much effort, but appears too strong for a person who has gone through a tragic and spine-chilling incident, which can be a tad unsettling.Sanjay Gupta spins a taut tale, bringing in many heartwarming sequences like the mall sequence, the suicide note in Braille and even the way the final murder is shown in a flashback.Nevertheless, in the final analysis, "Kaabil" is classic commercial cinema with justice done to this genre thriller despite of some minor flaws. And no Kaabil is not like Daredevil for those who think it is replicated from Daredevil. The concept may be the same but the plot is totally different. My Rating : 4.5/5

kaabil is hrithik's finest performance till date, he'll make u feel laugh, cry, helpless, angry..and finally leaves u satisfied!

I understand u don't need a logic in a movie making since it is a movie. But never expected this movie so bad. Even in 80's they made better movies than this. Coming to the performance as mentioned by lots of people they rated this is Hrithik's best performance, this is what made me to watch the movie but I am very disappointed. The standards of the movie and accessing the actors performance is degrading day by day. I still have lots of faith in Indian cinema and I hope for the best. The actors of 60's, 70's, 80's and 90's are way better than the current actors(with an exception of few). Just building the body and learning the dance is not enough. Frankly speaking I never had any hope from Sanjay Gupta but only the reviews made me to watch the movie and I wasted my valuable time.
