Miss Lovely Reviews and Ratings
-
It’s a sure-footed, even if slightly indulgent, debut – one that establishes an individual style that makes Ahluwalia’s future as a filmmaker an exciting prospect.
-
Nawazuddin Siddique has already carved a niche for himself and here, he has added so much more to his character than perhaps what the screenplay suggested.
For those who like discerning cinema, Miss Lovely beckons you to the theatre.
-
Selected to play in the prestigious Un Certain Regard section at the Cannes film festival in 2012, it’s an unconventional watch, yes, but it’s also refreshing to see a different kind of Indian cinema make its place in the world.
-
Miss Lovely moves slowly, unravelling like real life. It demands the viewer read into silences, see the phantoms hidden by smoke and the cheap dazzle of measly successes and the menace lurking in smiles and embraces. The violence and degradation that characterise the films that Vicky and Sonu make, seeps into their lives subtly. The point at which Miss Lovely flounders is in its last chapter.
-
That’s the root there, the connect – which isn’t there. Certainly a downer, for a film that wants you to experience, rather than just superficially know. Yet, you cannot take away from the fact, that it is brave indeed to make a film like Miss Lovely.
-
…bound to make you uncomfortable, but also brings the contentment of experiencing something new in cinema.
-
…a cinematic feast—its release is a great start to the year in Indian independent film-making.
-
Every character has a dead conscience and goes through the motions of life.
If you truly love cinema and want to experience something out of the ordinary, then MISS LOVELY is for you.
-
The pace of the film could have been faster though; but then again, it’s not a major complaint. Watch this film only if you are brave enough to dive into the ‘dirty’ pool. If you are lucky, you might shed a layer of ‘sophistication’ and feel liberated.
-
It has fabulous performances by the cast. Plus, Ahluwalia’s film has the impressive research, technical finesse, genre-breaking style, and an exciting backdrop.
But what’s the point when viewer keeps getting disconnected from the story and characters? In the case of Miss Lovely, the subject and style is far more absorbing than the film. Too bad, really!
-
‘Miss Lovely’ is just a load of xxx-cess. Skip!
-
Those who are attuned to watch watch world cinema and those who have an affinity for the pulp cinema of that kind, are prone to like the movie. For the rest, can’t say as Miss Lovely is a courageous and secured attempt to bring forward a story in highly stylized fashion.
-
…is heartfelt , entertaining and technically superb. Watch it for its performances and a sneak peek into the dark abyss of the smut films of the 80’s.
-
This is a film that unsettled me, and moved me. This is also a film I will savour for a long time. This is a film that unsettled me, and moved me. This is also a film I will savour for a long time.

I recommend that you see Miss Lovely. Yes, it is an acquired taste. But Ashim Ahluwalia’s distinct and intriguing voice is one more sign of how fundamentally and excitingly the Hindi film topography is changing.
-
No doubt, portions of the film are realistic but that can’t be the reason for the audience to like them. Also, the entire film has a very depressing feel to it, making it so much less enjoyable for the audience. On the whole, Miss Lovely is a fare more suited for the festival circuit. At the box-office, its run will be far from lovely.
-
While gaudily commercial films like R… Rajkumar lies on one end of the spectrum, Miss Lovely lies far on the other extreme and too much of anything is never a good thing.
-
MISS LOVELY is worth a watch for its taut screenplay, fine performances and the detailing that has gone into recreating the bygone era. At the same time, it caters more to aficionados of meaningful cinema!
-
Films like Miss Lovely are a diminishing species. Brimming with an extravagant concept, the film is made with poise as it captures the dark world of sleaze and horror. I for one found myself with a racing heart and heart in my throat by the end of the film and it takes me quite a cinematic momentum to push to that extent. Ornately shot, fabulously performed and intelligently thought.
-
Whatever the flaws may be, the power-packed performance of the actors, especially, Nawazuddin Siddiqui has made the film a worth watch.
-
The let down in this film is that it could have been quite beautiful if the crucial segments had been handled without the melodrama. Most of the film is slow and muted, and the end jars in context, and not in a way that can complement by contrast.
-
For filmgoers who love cinema that pushes and prods them into new directions, no matter how baffling, Miss Lovely is bound to be a memorable treat.
Strongly recommended.

The plot unfolds at a lethargic pace, with long-drawn scenes filled in with few dialogues. Some crucial scenes lack the emotional depth and connect you’d expect, inhibiting us from empathising with the protagonists. Nawazuddin shines brilliantly even in the smoky shadows of this sexploitative world, Niharika and Anil play their parts well. The film is stylishly sleazy, that’s what works for it. Watch it for a retro-ride into the naked innards of a soft-porn world and its bared bosoms.

Miss Lovely breaks a lot of Bollywood rules. You can bristle at its indulgences but, I’ll still root for a movie that fiddles with the rules over an easy commercial one. Especially if it has a climax that features blood and a Nazia Hassan song.
