MANMARZIYAAN comes across as a contemporary and an unorthodox tale laced with some brilliant performances and powerful writing. The bold theme of the film might restrict its appeal but its target audience is sure to give the film a thumbs up.

Abhishek Bachchan, Taapsee Pannu and Vicky Kaushal’s film Manmarziyaan may not be everyone’s cup of tea but if you are a diehard fan of romantic movies, it is a love story worth watching.

The film Manmarziyaan is a film that you can watch in theatres if you have nothing to do, either you can wait for it to telecast on television because this film of Anurag Kashyap has U/A certificate.

With Manmarziyaan, Anurag Kashyap finally unleashes his version 2.0 which is significantly different than his old self. Kashyap 2.0 has much less darker ideas about life. And the ideas are far more pragmatic. In fact, Anurag Kashyap 2.0 is closer to Karan Johar and Aanand L. Rai than to the Kashyap of old as a result of which Manmarziyaan doesn’t come across as a film that’s true to his revered body of work.

Abhishek and Vicky give their roles all they have but the screenplay does not give them the bandwidth reserved for Taapsee…

Anurag Kashyap’s film flounders except when humour rears its head…

The relentless drama that follows, by the minute, in the lives of the volatile lead couple (Vicky Kaushal, Taapsee Pannu) in unhinged love, will make you feel thoroughly relieved about your own staid existence though.

The film benefits from Amit Trivedi’s fabulous soundtrack. Songs like Daryaa and Halla stay with you after you leave the theatre. Rumi and Vicky stay with you after the end credits roll. But Manmarziyaan lets you go with the feeling that you’ve just seen Dev D from a Paro’s point of view. Except, a mediocre version.

With Manmarziyaan, it is this kind of love story that Kashyap, I think, is out to challenge.

His lovers are too messy for an external force to cause any real harm.

They have no enemies to shoot, and so they take aim at each other.

For the eternal die-hard romantics, Manmarziyaan is that tale which encourages you to dream on, no matter what. Go for it with that special someone. 

For a film that waxes eloquent about the unpredictability and volatility of love, the end feels like an unnecessary cop-out.

This now yes-now no, now no-now yes romance tests patience beyond a point…

The film can be viewed as a beautiful character study about three fallible persons, but somehow compatible on a deeper level.

You want to shake these lovers and ask them to make up their mind, quick. You enjoy the initial exhilaration born out of breathless passion as the winsome boy and girl engage in the age-old dance of desire. And then they become exhausting. As does the film.

One of the finest filmmakers of our time, Anurag shows his range with Manmarziyaan. In one of his most easygoing films, he manages to add his touch to an otherwise old theme, and that makes Manmarziyaan a film worth spending time on.

Writer Kanika Dhillon has etched real-life situations. The conversations between people carry a ring of reality as well. We see three actual people, and not film tropes or archetypes, trying to make sense of their lives. There is no unnecessary drama in the film. The girl doesn’t get berated for bringing the ghar ki izzat down, nor is the boy beaten up by her relatives. Every situation is dealt with a certain restraint and maturity.

This new-age love story with Facebook friend requests and Tinder conversations, also has the charm and depth of an old-school love saga. The motif of twins, peppered right through the film is funny and random but if you dig deep, you will probably find out why. At times, the story might be a little too deep for millennials, but Manmarziyaan is one of the best romantic movies to come out of Bollywood in a long time.
