Humpty Sharma Ki Dulhania Reviews and Ratings
-
Thanks to the sloppy writing in the second half, the film seems much longer than 135
minutes. A tribute to DDLJ is fine but it doesn’t have to be an unimaginative one. Ultimately, it is the characters that drive the film and a fair amount of laughs are generated by Humpty’s two friends. As a trend in recent times we have seen that the women character’s are not stereotypes and it applies to this film as well- as a larger reflection of the societal issues, the three generations of ladies are seen discussing male issues, in one of the best scenes. -
HSKD has plenty of feel-good moments, but nothing that will leave you punch-drunk. For romantics who believe in their dils and their dulhanias.
-
Shahrukh, Kajol, and Aditya Chopra made a classic that remains the enduring film of our generation. Humpty… has no such aspirations, and aims to simply entertain. In that, it succeeds. Nothing more, nothing less.
-
Not everything in HSKD is real or logical but all of it is entertaining. For sure HSKD is old wine in a new bottle but one that will make you say cheers.
-
The movie goers may find the ending weird but Varun-Alia’s chemistry would nullify the minor glitches in the flick.
Watch ‘Humpty Sharma Ki Dulhaniya’ for wonderful performances, smart screenplay and just a good love story. -
For most part, Humpty Sharma ki Dulhania is a fun, but bland and forgettable film. Its real failure is that this tribute to DDLJ doesn’t have any characters or moments that stay with you. In its time, DDLJ was filled with clichés too, but it packaged them in situations that made them endearing, memorable and new. Humpty Sharma ki Dulhania, to quote one of the film’s better lines, is a “100% original fake” and you can’t help wondering, for all its laughs, why anyone bothered to make this film when re-runs of DDLJ exist.
-
Good writing and good performances can bring alive even the most jaded of plots. Watch Humpty Sharma Ki Dulhania without expecting any novelty in terms of storyline. You may just go ‘awww’ at a few places!
-
DDLJ redux for a more practical and fun loving generation…
-
…has all the elements for an entertaining watch. Loveable characters? Good acting? An upbeat soundtrack? Check, check and check! Though it isn’t the rom-com to define this generation, it’s a good film you can enjoy over the weekend.
-
Watch out for `Humpty..` this weekend, if you are a die-hard fan of rom-coms – a lot of fun awaits you.
-
Thank God for Varun Dhawan and Alia Bhatt. The soul shivers in fear wondering which disaster zone this bland avatar of Dilwale Dulhaniya Le Jayenge would have headed to if these two actors hadn’t steered the rudderless revisionist saga to semblance of sensitivity.
-
This film clearly doesn’t take itself too seriously and it doesn’t want you to either, which is kind of nice. A me-too, even if in the form of open admiration, has the danger of being easily forgettable. But this film might just not be, because it does manage to stand on its own two feet at some points.
-
HSKD is cute. It is certainly DDLJ catching up with today’s times. So, it sheds itself of much dramatization and a good part of the run-time. But, it also doesn’t stimulate any emotion, let alone touch you from within.
-
…clichés aside (there’s plenty of Virji, Biji, Bapuji, you get the drift), HSKD is a romcom perfect for cuddling up with your loved one in the irresistible rainy season. It’s food for our sappy souls. Make it your weekend watch… Go fall in love.
-
This is a film that’s very much like the cold coffee our protagonists enjoy. Enjoyable, cool and good while it lasts. Slurp on!
-
It’s definitely not a modern day DDLJ, but it still ends up being an enjoyable romantic ride worth the price of its ticket.
-
…is an enjoyable entertainer and will keep everyone associated with it, as also the audience, very happy. With around 75% of its cost of Rs. 28-30 crore already recovered prior to release, it is anybody’s guess that it will yield very handsome profits to the producers and distributors, right from the first weekend itself, while keeping the exhibitors smiling from ear to ear. Hit!
-
…comes peppered with smart dialogue, and filled with genuine affection for a cinematic blockbuster that it repeatedly references…but with flair. Watch it for Varun and Alia, who’re crackling in it!
-
A few rough edges aside, the lead pair is the reason to give this film a watch. Alia and Varun are to Humpty Sharma… what Ranveer and Anushka were to Band Baajaa Baaraat. This film may not be as riveting as Band Baajaa…but it’s the chemistry that makes the film, right from the backbone to the soul.
-
‘Humpty Sharma Ki Dulhania’ scores with its likeable lead pair. Varun Dhawan still has raw edges and lets the effort show but he is right for Humpty the Dumpty who likes sitting on wall, and doesn’t mind a fall. As the designer ‘lehenga’-craving ‘kudi’ who turns into a girl who chooses substance over style, Alia Bhatt is vibrant and fresh, and the highlight of the film.
-
This is confoundingly enough a film which follows a tremendously predictable graph — one channeling not just that Raj-Simran movie but also Maine Pyar Kiya, Pyar Kiya Toh Darna Kya and several of those charming Genelia D’Souza films from the South, like Bommarillu — and yet a film that manages to stay captivating and current.
The strength of Khaitan’s film lies in how it’s not trying too hard, it’s not trying at reinventing the wheel, and instead being honest to two characters who, it becomes gradually apparent, aren’t who they said they were — or, more importantly, they aren’t who they thought they were.
-
Humpty Sharma Ki Dulhania is an extended, 134-minute review of Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge by a debutant writer and director who has watched the film closely enough to have his own spin on it. Shashank Khaitan’s film-making debut arrives 19 years after Aditya Chopra’s blockbuster became the gold standard of screen romance, and he has the necessary distance from the source material to unpack the conservatism that beats loudly at the heart of the original movie.
-
What saves Humpty Sharma is that unlike other formulaic love stories set amid burgeoning families and wedding shenanigans, it spells out its references, and constantly hat-tips iconic Hindi cinema moments from the ’90s. It reminds you that, sometimes, dal chawal is sufficient, and if you are looking for some comfort food this weekend, you probably won’t mind a helping of Humpty Sharma Ki Dulhania. The film took its time to grow on me but by the time Singh looked at Humpty with long-last affection and said “Jee le apni zindagi” (instead of saying it to Kavya), I knew the time spent on the film wasn’t wasted.
-
Barring the climax, Humpty Sharma Ki Dulhania is a delightful film which shouldn’t be missed.
-
…is yet another example why certain films are called great and the rest are just average. A DDLJ is almost impossible to redo. You do not root for the lead actors in HSKD like you did for SRK and Kajol. Yet, this one is a fun one-time watch for sure. Like any honest celebration of our filmy spirit.
-
If you are a die hard DDLJ fan and wish to relive the saga of the love story with a touch of modernity and zing added to it, go watch Humpty Sharma Ki Dulhania. Humpty and Kavya will surely win you over with their entertaining romance!
-
Predictable in most parts, Humpty Sharma Ki Dulhania entertains you from the first frame to the last one. It’s a refreshing film.
-
Repeated references to scenes, characters and situations from DDLJ may bug you sometimes. This film can fully stand on its own feet. It’s hard for a movie to remain in public memory as long, given the choices of entertainment available now. DDLJ is still playing in a theatre in Mumbai. This would be the chick magnet for the week, for sure.
-
Watch Humpty Sharma Ki Dulhaniya for wonderful performances, Ashutosh Rana and smart screenplay. But do remember it’s one of the dreamy, larger-than-life and low on logic Bollywood movies.
-
Humpty Sharma Ki Dulhaniya is low on froth, zero soul and an absolute bore of a film! My review might seem like a polemic but the reason for it is : don’t tamper with classics and take pride in butchering them. This lehengey wala love simply didn’t work for me. Only Alia and Varun save this film with their energetic rendering and the dialogue writers get a pat on from me for trying their best to keep it zesty but this film doesn’t rise above a 2.5/5 for me. I expected too much and too little was meted out to me #storyofeveryfilmcritic’slife

To be fair, Humpty Sharma Ki Dulhania does have some warm passages. But the overall package that it adds up to is about as appetizing as a bottle of beer gone flat.
Recommended only for Bollywood junkies that love their froth served in receptacles that have no depth.
-
The story is predictable, but this film is made watchable primarily because of Bhatt and Dhawan. This film may not go down as the biggest romance of 2014, but it’s not fair to write it off either.
-
Humpty Sharma Ki Dulhania is an out-an-out entertainment movie more so for the youth! Humpty is worth a watch once to have fun!
-
Despite some good performances and a few wonderfully written lines, ‘Humpty Sharma Ki Dulhaniya’ stops from being an endearing tale of love, because it blindly piggybacks on the classic without any heart or logic.
It’s much ado about a lehenga!
-
HSKD has plenty of feel-good moments, but nothing that will leave you punch-drunk. For romantics who believe in their dils and their dulhanias.

HUMPTY SHARMA KI DULHANIA is a beautifully textured love story that wins you over. There’s no stopping this one from hitting the bull’s eye. Sure-shot winner!
